Dance/Movement Therapy (DMT) and Therapeutic Dance (TD):
While dancing can be a therapeutic experience, therapeutic dance alone is not the same as Dance/Movement Therapy (DMT). Because it is human nature to want to label things that make us feel good as “therapy,” people often confuse DMT with therapeutic dance. Though the simple act of taking part in therapeutic dance, or any dance class for that matter, may feel like therapy or therapeutic, it is not.
Dance/Movement Therapy is, “The psychotherapeutic use of movement which furthers the emotional and physical integration of the individual” (American Dance Therapy Association – ADTA).
In order to call one’s work dance therapy and to practice as a Dance Therapist in the United States, one must have at minimum, a master’s degree in the field and a valid credential and / or license in Dance / Movement Therapy from an ADTA approved and credentialed program. This is exactly what LADS has in-house.
LADS program developers, facilitators, and teachers have over 35 years of hands-on experience in healthcare and dance. We are uniquely experienced in combing dance and healing as Board Certified Dance/Movement Therapists (BC-DMT), Medical Doctors (MD), Occupational Therapists (OT), Psychologists, Chinese Medicine Practitioners, and Acupuncturists.
As such LADS is uniquely positioned to offer DMT and TD sessions, workshops, and training program in DMT and TD.
We create a safe space (psychological, physical, and emotional) for all to access and experience the power of dance in daily life that is free from judgment and promotes individual mental health and overall community wellbeing.
